If you have a gun and determined to defend yourself, you have a very good chance, because

1. Bad guys can't afford good guns or good training.

2. Bad guys are usually cowards, almost always picking on weak victims, almost always run away when facing a gun.

You seem to look for excuse not to get a gun.
