You may find the definitions of RSS on the net. Here is my simple explanation of what it is and what it means to us.
Blogging is like esposing oneself in the public. Now hottest Chinese blogger by number of hits is perhaps Xu Jinglei.
If you are addicted to someone's blog but you don't know how often the blogger publishes her new diary and new thoughts, you would have to go look for updates yourself.
So here comes teh RSS (or RSS feed more precisely). RSS is not much different than newgroups. By protocol an RSS feed is a file in XML format. It contains several items, each contains an URL of a web site. Blogger's XML must contain the URL of that blog site. Using an RSS reader, such as Thunderbird, you subscribe to an RSS. The RSS reader usually updates the RSS feeds every so often or on demand to download the "headlines". Usually, you click one of them, a web page will show up.
So in summary, RSS lets you to read contents of your interest whenever they are updated, rather than to go the web site check things out yourself, like here.
Does this make sense?
